Multimedia Messaging Service

MMS stands for Multimedia Messaging Service, which is used to send and receive messages that include multimedia contents like images, graphics, audio and video from one mobile to another. MMS is developed by Open Mobile Alliance (OMA). When compared to SMS, these MMS Messages are delivered to user in a different way. At first the MMS Message is encoded at the sending device which is similar to a MIME e-mail. This message is forwarded to the carrier’s and store in a server known as MMSC.

Once the MMSC carrier receives the message, it first checks whether the receiver handset is MMS capable or not. If it supports then it extracts the content and sends to temporary storage server with a HTTP front-end. The control message with an URL is received by the receiver who is on another carrier through internet and opens the embedded URL by using WAP browser. If the receiver’s handset is not MMS Capable then the message is delivered to web based server where content can be seen by using normal internet browser. This URL is sent to receiver’s mobile in normal text format. We can also send bulk MMS messages by using MMS Gateway at a time.
